ratfeet

The babies of Trinket's litter are now 4 and a half weeks, so they've been separated. There's officially 8 bucks (males) and 4 does (females).

Since these pages will be graphic intensive because my babies love to get their pictures taken, I'll try to make a new page every time I update and link it to this one.

All my rats are common (feeder) rats, rescued from being fed to snakes. While I applaud people trying to breed to improve rats, and wish I could support them, I only 'save' feeder rats, I don't purchase from breeders. I don't think the 'bad' of 'supporting' a feeder rat breeder outweighs the good of rescuing one or two from being fed to reptiles. Of course this can and has led to getting rats with health problems and 'non-show' quality rats, but I don't think any rat deserves to be fed to a snake. All my feeder rats have been excellent pets, and while they've had their share of health problems (my agouti female developed tumors as she got older, my black female had respiratory problems I couldn't get rid of and they eventually killed her) overall they haven't been bad enough to make me stop saving feeders.

All these boys are from Trinket's litter, Trinket is a rescued feeder rat that was pregnant when I rescued her and gave me 12 babies a week later.

The Bucks

Please note: I'm not sure all the correct terms for the colors, and I wasn't able to find a really good reference for this.

All my brown rats from Trinket's litter are not reddish brown, they're blueish brown.

Dragon

Coco Brown (Cinnamon? Mink? ) Capped with large forehead spot.

Officially adopted/named by my best friend Tracey Bartone, but since she lives on the other side of the country and there's really no way to get him there he has to stay here with me. He's very mischevious and active, and usually getting in trouble with Badger.

Badger

Coco Brown (Cinnamon? Mink?) Masked with large blaze.

Badger's markings reminded me of a badger obviously, so he was the first one named. He's got to be the most unusually marked rat I've ever seen. He's a ham, loves people..loves cameras..loves to be out.

Trouble? Us? We're too cute to be trouble!

Fieval

Coco Brown/Cinnamon/Mink? Berkshire (white belly)

I realize Fieval was a mouse. I tried to name him something different but it stuck. :) He's very friendly and outgoing, always comes up to me to be picked up.

Onyx

Black Hooded Variegated w/tiny forehead spot

Named after a vampire in my fantasy novels, Onyx is rather serious and quiet, but can be adventurous.

Samson

Beige Self with ruby eyes

Samson was the largest of the litter to start, and he stands out as the only rat in the litter that doesn't look like the others. He loves to burrow and groom.

Templeton the 3rd

(Tempe)

Black hooded with diamond-ish spot on back.

When I was little, my first rat was a black hooded I named Templeton after the rat in Charlotte's Web. After that I had a second black hooded male that the name also fit. So this is the third black hooded I'll have had that's name was Templeton. I actually just call this one Tempe. I was going to be more creative but he looks so much like the original Templeton that I couldn't help myself. :)

???

Brown Capped with tiny forehead spot

This guy, I need help deciding a name for. The choices have been narrowed to Squall, Rubi, or Flurry. He's the twin of Dart (which you can see on the females' page). He's very tiny/timid.

????

Black Berkshire (white belly)

Not sure which to name this one either. The choices are Sion, after a brave dark elf in my novels, or Sephiroth (Sephy) after of course the famous villain in Final Fantasy 7.
